Incarnate Word downs St. Joseph's agin, seeks three-peat at state

NORMANDY • Incarnate Word faced its biggest of a number of obstacles to date—battling St. Joseph’s with its star center Taylor Manuel hobbled with a bum knee—Saturday in a Class 5 quarterfinal game.

The hurdle was not too big for the tenacious Red Knights to overcome.

Led by Manuel, who scored a team-high 12 points, two-time reigning state champion Incarnate topped St. Joe's 49-42 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Incarnate Word turns up defensive pressure, rolls past Parkway South

NORMANDY •  Parkway South was able to deal with Lafayette’s smothering pressure defense in an upset of the Lancers in a Class 5 district final Friday.

The Patriots, however, didn’t have the same luck against Incarnate Word in Wednesday’s Class 5 girls basketball sectional at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Red Knights turned the Parkway South offense inside out as they came up with 23 steals on their way to a 63-28 victory.

Deloach, Manuel power comeback as Incarnate rolls by Pattonville

CHESTERFIELD • For two quarters, Pattonville looked poised to pull off a colossal upset Friday in a Class 5 District 4 title game showdown with Incarnate Word.

Then the Red Knights showed why they are the two-time defending Class 5 state champions.

Sparked by two 3-pointers at the start of the third quarter by Lateesha Deloach, Incarnate quickly overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and went on to pull out a hard-fought 48-39 victory.

MSHSAA Announces District 4 Girls Basketball Tournament Bracket

Incarnate Word Academy received the number one seed in the Class 5 District 4 Tournament and will open play on Thursday, February 23 at Parkway Central against the winner of the Hazelwood West and Parkway Central game.

Red-hot IWA blasts Nerinx to ice girls conference hoops title

BEL-NOR • The Incarnate Word girls basketball team was in attendance Saturday when Rock Bridge beat St. Joseph's in the final of the Webster Winter Classic.

If the two-time defending Class 5 champion Red Knights were in awe of the performance by Rock Bridge, the No. 1 team in a state-wide coaches poll, they haven't shown it.

Incarnate opened its week by overpowering Visitation by 31 on the Vivettes' floor on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Red Knights played even better, hammering visiting Nerinx Hall 76-34.

OAKLAND • Ursuline has one of the best records in the area, but the Bears have not done well against ranked teams.

They were hoping to change that Thursday. However, they picked the wrong ranked team to try to make a stand against.

Red-hot Incarnate Word, the No. 1 team in the STLhighschoolsports.com large-schools rankings, got a triple-double from senior center Taylor Manuel, and rolled to a 56-35 victory over Ursuline in a Metro Women's Athletic Association White Division contest.

BEL-NOR • The new kids on the block found out what it's like to step up a class on Tuesday night.

And it was far from what they hoped.

Upstart Miller Career did hold newly-minted large-schools No. 1 Incarnate Word to just 19 first half points. But the Phoenix offense never got on track, and the host Red Knights got a game-high 14 points from Taylor Manuel in a 51-38 victory.

The latest bout between the area perennial powers was like that, too. The host Red Knights held an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter. The game looked thoroughly finished at that point.

TOWN AND COUNTRY • This time Lafayette did more than just score a moral victory over Incarnate Word.

The Lancers got a game-high 14 points from Jordynn Martin and an outstanding defensive effort as they stunned the two-time defending Class 5 champion Red Knights 42-30 in the Prepcasts Elite Girls Shootout IV Saturday at CBC High School.

FRONTENAC, Mo. • Incarnate Word may not have the dazzling record that it ordinarily has at this time of the year, but it showed Wednesday it's still the team to beat in St. Louis.

The Red Knights got balanced scoring and repelled a late run from St. Joseph's en route to a 46-41 win in front of a standing room-only crowd in the final of the Visitation Christmas Tournament.

Red Knights Compete in Turkey Jamm

The Red Knights opened their season after Thanksgiving in Memphis, Tennessee at the 3rd Annual Turkey Jamm at Memphis Central High School.

Incarnate Word opened the season playing North Little Rock (ranked #25 ESPN preseason poll). The Charging Wildcats held a lead a majority of the game, but the Red Knights fought back and tied the game 54-54 to send it to overtime. The Red Knights fell in the extra period 67-62 with Taylor Manuel sitting out the overtime after fouling out. IWA was led in scoring with Taylor Manuel and Nakiah Bell with 16 each, and McKenna Treece added 15 points.

On Sunday, the Red Knights faced Memphis Central, the 2011 Tennessee Class AAA State Champions and the team ranked #3 in the country by MaxPreps. The Lady Warriors featured signees that are going to Louisiana State and Georgia Tech. The Red Knights led much of the first half, and took a 30-28 lead into halftime. The third quarter, Incarnate Word stifled Memphis Central holding them to 6 points, and sealed a 65-54 win.

Incarnate was paced by 25 points from Purdue signee Taylor Manuel. Cierra Young added 17 points while making 6 of 7 field goal attempts, including 2 three point baskets.

The Red Knights face their next opponent on Tuesday, December 6 at Principia.
